Ties between the US and France have been quite interlinked for most of the history of the United States. France was the first country to recognize the US as independent from Great Britain and, in fact, helped finance and fight the Revolutionary War. It's not exaggeration to say that the US would not have won the war without French help, and reminders of these ties are sprinkled all over Paris. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all spent years in France as representatives of the US, and they and others later have left traces of their stays around the city.
